Critical Reading Strategies

Preview & Prioritize

  • Skimming: rapid overview of structure and main points
  • Scanning: targeted search for specific information
  • Rereading: return to passages for deeper understanding
  • Questioning: ask what, why, how as you read

Make Meaning

  • Annotating: mark key ideas, tone shifts, assumptions
  • Note-taking: record main claims and supporting details
  • Highlighting: identify thesis, evidence, transitions
  • Reading aloud: hear rhythm, emphasis, and tone

Read for: main idea, tone, assumptions, context, perspective, reasoning, evidence

Context & Relationships

Context shapes interpretation:

  • Historical time period and cultural moment
  • Author's stated purpose and audience
  • Relationship to other arguments on the topic
  • Disciplinary or professional conventions

Evidence reveals relationships:

  • Causal: X causes Y (requires strong evidence)
  • Correlational: X and Y occur together (not necessarily causal)
  • Comparative: similarities and differences between X and Y

Patterns & trends: repeated observations across multiple cases strengthen conclusions

Identifying Main Ideas

Where to find the main idea:

  • Thesis statement or claim (often early or late)
  • Conclusion (restates or synthesizes)
  • Implied throughout the work (no single sentence)

Avoid:

  • Oversimplification: reducing nuance and complexity
  • Faulty generalization: claiming too much from limited evidence
  • Confusing supporting details with the central argument

For artistic works: analyze context, subject, structure, style, and aesthetic choices to understand perspective and aims
