The Seven Modes

Modes are seven scales built on each scale degree of the major scale. Each has a distinct intervallic pattern and tonal character.

ModeBuilt onCharacter
IonianScale degree 1Major; bright
DorianScale degree 2Minor with raised 6; jazzy
PhrygianScale degree 3Minor with lowered 2; dark
LydianScale degree 4Major with raised 4; bright
MixolydianScale degree 5Major with lowered 7; bluesy
AeolianScale degree 6Natural minor
LocrianScale degree 7Minor with lowered 2 and 5; unstable

Identify modes by: Listening for the tonal center and comparing the scale to major or minor. Look for characteristic raised or lowered scale degrees.

Analyzing Phrase Relationships

Steps to label phrases:

  1. Listen or read for natural phrase breaks (usually at cadences or rests)
  2. Compare the melody of each phrase to others
  3. Assign letters: first phrase = a
  4. If the next phrase is identical, call it a; if varied, call it a′; if different, call it b
  5. Continue through the passage

Example: A song with structure a a′ b a has two similar opening phrases, a contrasting middle, and a return to the opening idea.
