Allergies are hypersensitive immune responses to substances that either enter or come into contact with the body. These substances, called allergens, can trigger symptoms affecting various organs, including the pulmonary system.
Asthma: A chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that causes periodic attacks of coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Anaphylaxis: A severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur rapidly after exposure to an allergen.
Histamine: A compound released by cells in response to injury and in allergic and inflammatory reactions causing contraction of smooth muscle and dilation of capillaries.
