Roger B. Taney was the fifth Chief Justice of the United States, serving from 1836 to 1864, known for his controversial ruling in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case which declared that African Americans could not be American citizens and negated federal power to regulate slavery in U.S. territories. His decision had profound implications on civil rights and is often cited as a catalyst for the American Civil War.
