Press Freedom Day

Definition

Press Freedom Day is an annual event celebrated on May 3rd, designated by the United Nations to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a day to reflect on issues of press freedom and professional ethics, as well as to honor journalists who have lost their lives in the pursuit of truth.
