Definition

The Métis are a distinct group of Indigenous people in Canada, who trace their descent to both Indigenous and European (primarily French) ancestors. They have a unique culture combining elements of both heritages and have been recognized as one of the three Aboriginal peoples in Canada under the Constitution Act of 1982.
