Definition

The Castle Doctrine is a legal principle that allows an individual to use force, including deadly force, to defend themselves against an intruder within their home without the duty to retreat. This doctrine asserts the home as a place where an individual has certain protections and immunities to defend themselves against illegal intrusions or attacks.
