Interphase

from class:

General Biology I

Definition

Interphase is the phase of the cell cycle during which the cell prepares for division. It consists of three stages: G1, S, and G2, where the cell grows and replicates its DNA.

congrats on reading the definition of interphase. now let's actually learn it.

ok, let's learn stuff

5 Must Know Facts For Your Next Test

  1. Interphase accounts for approximately 90% of the cell cycle duration.
  2. The G1 stage focuses on cell growth and protein synthesis.
  3. During the S phase, DNA replication occurs, resulting in two sister chromatids for each chromosome.
  4. The G2 stage involves further growth and preparation for mitosis, including the synthesis of microtubules.
  5. Cells can enter a resting state known as G0 from G1 if they are not actively preparing to divide.

Review Questions

  • What are the three stages of interphase?
  • During which stage of interphase does DNA replication occur?
  • What happens to a cell during the G2 stage?
