G0 phase

from class:

General Biology I

Definition

The G0 phase is a period in the cell cycle where cells exist in a quiescent state. Cells in this phase have exited the active cycle and do not prepare to divide.

congrats on reading the definition of G0 phase. now let's actually learn it.

ok, let's learn stuff

5 Must Know Facts For Your Next Test

  1. Cells can enter the G0 phase from the G1 phase of the cell cycle.
  2. Some cells, like neurons and muscle cells, remain in G0 permanently.
  3. The G0 phase can be reversible; some cells can re-enter the cell cycle if needed.
  4. G0 is often referred to as a 'resting' phase because cells are not actively preparing for division.
  5. External signals such as nutrients and growth factors can influence whether a cell enters or exits the G0 phase.

Review Questions

  • What triggers a cell to enter the G0 phase?
  • Which types of cells are most likely to remain in the G0 phase permanently?
  • Can cells re-enter the cell cycle from the G0 phase? If so, under what conditions?
