Bleaching

from class:

General Biology I

Definition

Bleaching is the process where coral lose their symbiotic algae, known as zooxanthellae, often due to stress from environmental changes. This results in the coral turning white and can lead to widespread reef damage if prolonged.

congrats on reading the definition of bleaching. now let's actually learn it.

ok, let's learn stuff

5 Must Know Facts For Your Next Test

  1. Bleaching is primarily caused by increased water temperatures.
  2. Coral reefs are crucial marine ecosystems that provide habitat for many species.
  3. Ocean acidification, pollution, and overexposure to sunlight also contribute to bleaching.
  4. Bleaching events have increased in frequency and severity due to climate change.
  5. Recovery from bleaching can occur if conditions improve quickly, but prolonged stress can lead to coral death.

Review Questions

  • What primary factor causes coral bleaching?
  • How does climate change affect the frequency of bleaching events?
  • Can corals recover from bleaching? If so, under what conditions?
