Angiotensin I is a peptide hormone that plays a critical role in the regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance. It is produced from angiotensinogen, a protein secreted by the liver, through the action of renin, an enzyme released by the kidneys. Angiotensin I itself is relatively inactive but is converted into the more active angiotensin II by the action of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), significantly influencing osmoregulatory functions and vascular resistance.
