Definition

An expectation that people will help those dependent upon them or those who need assistance even if doing so may not offer any visible reward.

Analogy

Imagine being an older sibling. Even if your younger brother or sister annoys you sometimes, there's an unspoken rule that as their elder sibling, you're expected to look out for them and help them when they need it.
