Open systems

Definition

Open systems refer to systems that can exchange both matter and energy with their surroundings.

Imagine an open window in a room. Air can freely flow in and out of the room, allowing for exchange between the inside and outside environments.

Closed systems: Closed systems are similar to open systems but do not allow for the exchange of matter with their surroundings.

Thermodynamics: The study of energy transformations and transfers, including those that occur in open systems.

Entropy: A measure of the disorder or randomness within a system, which tends to increase in open systems over time.
