Irrigation Technology

Definition

Irrigation technology refers to the various methods used to supply water artificially to soil for assisting in crop growth when rainfall is not sufficient.

Analogy

Consider irrigation technology like your home's sprinkler system. When there isn't enough rainwater for your lawn or garden plants' needs, you use the sprinkler system to provide them with additional water they need - just like how farmers irrigate their fields.

Related terms

Drip Irrigation: A type of micro-irrigation system that has potential to save water by allowing water to drip slowly directly onto the roots of plants.

Center Pivot Irrigation: A method where equipment rotates around a pivot and crops are watered with sprinklers.

Furrow Irrigation: An ancient method where trenches or "furrows" are dug between crop rows in a field. Water flows down these furrows and seeps into the soil providing moisture for plant roots.
