An informal settlement refers to residential areas where housing has been constructed on land that the occupants have no legal claim to or which they occupy illegally.
Imagine playing a game of Monopoly but instead of buying properties officially, you just place your pieces wherever you want without following the rules. That's similar to how informal settlements work - people set up homes without official permission or ownership rights.
Land Tenure: The legal right to hold or occupy property for a certain period of time. In informal settlements, this is typically absent or unclear.
Squatting: The action of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied area of land or building that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have lawful permission to use.
Peri-urban Areas: Regions lying immediately outside the official boundaries of a city; these areas often see development from informal settlements.
