Geopolitics involves studying the effects of geography (human and physical) on politics and international relations.

Analogy

Imagine geopolitics as playing chess on a world map board game. Each move represents strategic decisions made by countries influenced by their geographical location and resources available.

Related terms

Geopolitical Theory: A theory that holds that states behave according to predictable laws, and these can be analyzed by studying geography.

Heartland Theory: A geopolitical concept which proposes that any political power based in the heart of Eurasia could gain enough strength to eventually dominate the world.

Rimland Theory: This theory counters Heartland Theory by arguing that control over maritime fringe of a country is more important than internal (heartland) areas.
