Demographic Transition Model

Definition

The Demographic Transition Model is an explanation about how countries transition from having high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates as they develop from a pre-industrial to an industrialized economic system.

Analogy

The Demographic Transition Model is like a roller coaster ride. At first, you're at the bottom with high birth and death rates (like being in line for the ride). As you climb up, death rates drop (the anticipation builds), then you reach the top where birth rates begin to fall (the thrilling drop). Finally, you end up back at the bottom with both low birth and death rates (like getting off the ride).
