Cultural Assimilation

Definition

Cultural assimilation is the process by which individuals or groups of differing ethnic heritage are absorbed into the dominant culture of a society. It involves adopting the language, values, norms, behaviors, and institutions of the dominant group.

Analogy

Think about a chameleon that changes its color to match its surroundings for survival. Similarly, in cultural assimilation, an individual or group changes their own cultural practices to blend in with the dominant culture.
