The death penalty, also known as capital punishment, is a government-sanctioned practice where a person is put to death by the state as a punishment for a crime.
Think of the death penalty like the most severe form of detention that a school can give. If you break minor rules, you might get detention or suspension. But if you do something extremely serious and harmful, there's an ultimate punishment - expulsion. In this case, the death penalty is like expulsion from life itself.
Capital Crime: A crime so serious that it could result in the perpetrator's death upon conviction.
Life Imprisonment: A type of sentence where an individual is confined in prison either for life or until parole.
Cruel and Unusual Punishment: Punishment that is considered unacceptable due to the suffering or humiliation it inflicts on the person subjected to it.
