Definition

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher. He is generally considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history.

Analogy

Think of Rembrandt as the "Michael Jordan" of painting during the Dutch Golden Age. Just like Michael Jordan revolutionized basketball with his unique style, Rembrandt did the same for painting with his innovative techniques, such as his dramatic use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro).

Chiaroscuro: An Italian term that means 'light-dark'. In paintings it refers to clear tonal contrasts which are often used to suggest volume. It's a technique that became prominent during Renaissance period.

Etching: A method of making prints from a metal plate into which the design has been incised by acid. The plate is then inked all over, wiped clean then paper is pressed onto it resulting in an image.
