Fair Use

Definition

Fair use is a legal doctrine that allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission from the copyright owner. It provides exceptions to copyright law for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.

Analogy

Think of fair use like borrowing someone's car for a short period of time to run errands or go on a quick trip. You're allowed to use it without asking for permission because it falls under certain circumstances where borrowing is acceptable.
