Ionic Salt

Definition

An ionic salt is a compound formed from the neutralization reaction of an acid and a base. It consists of cations (positive ions) and anions (negative ions), which are held together by ionic bonds.

Analogy

Think of ionic salts like magnets. Just as opposite poles on magnets attract each other, in an ionic salt, positive ions (cations) and negative ions (anions) are attracted to each other.

Related terms

Cation: A positively charged ion that is attracted towards the cathode during electrolysis.

Anion: A negatively charged ion that is attracted towards the anode during electrolysis.
