Freezing

Definition

Freezing is the process in which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid state, usually as a result of temperature decrease.

Analogy

Think of freezing like turning off the dance music at a party. When the music (or heat) is on, all the party-goers (or molecules) are moving around freely and energetically (like in a liquid). But when you turn off the music (lower the temperature), everyone stops moving and stands still (becomes solid).

Related terms

Phase Change: A change from one state of matter to another without changing its chemical composition.

Solidification: The process of becoming rigid or firm; another term for freezing.

Supercooling: The process of chilling a liquid below its freezing point, without it becoming solid.
