Definition
Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that prevent them from deteriorating or fusing with neighboring chromosomes. They play a key role in cellular aging and cancer.
These are thread-like structures located inside the nucleus of animal and plant cells. Each chromosome is made of protein and a single molecule of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which contains most of an organism's genetic instructions.
Cellular Aging: This refers to the process by which a cell becomes old and dies. It is driven by various factors including DNA damage, oxidative stress, and telomere shortening.
Cancer: A group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If not controlled, it can cause death. Some cancers may be linked to shortened telomeres.
