Polymerization

Definition

Polymerization is the process by which monomers (small molecules) combine to form a larger, more complex structure known as a polymer.

Analogy

Think of polymerization like building with Lego blocks. Each block (monomer) can be connected to another to create a larger structure (polymer). Just like you can build different things with Legos, different types of monomers can combine in various ways to create diverse polymers.

Related terms

Monomer: A molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer.

Polymer: A large molecule composed of many repeated subunits, known as monomers.

Dehydration Synthesis: The process that links two monomers together and removes a molecule of water.
