Definition
A polarized membrane is a state of the cell where the inside and outside of the cell have different electrical charges. This difference in charge is essential for many cellular processes, including communication between cells.
Related terms
Resting Potential: The electrical potential of a neuron or other excitable cell at rest, due to different concentrations of ions inside and outside the cell.
Action Potential: A rapid rise and subsequent fall in voltage or membrane potential across a cellular membrane with respect to time.
Depolarization: The process during an action potential when sodium is rushing into the cell causing the interior to become more positive.
