Phagocytosis
Definition
Phagocytosis is a type of endocytosis where a cell engulfs large particles or whole cells, either as a defense mechanism or as a way to obtain food.
Analogy
Imagine phagocytosis like Pac-Man eating ghosts. The cell (Pac-Man) surrounds and consumes large particles or other cells (ghosts).
Related terms
Pseudopodia: Temporary, arm-like extensions of a cell used in moving or engulfing food or other particles. They play a key role in phagocytosis.
White Blood Cells: These cells use phagocytosis to engulf and destroy pathogens like bacteria and viruses.
Endosome: A membrane-bound compartment inside eukaryotic cells. It is used for the transport of substances into the cell after they have been engulfed by the process of endocytosis, which includes phagocytosis.
