GTP Cap
Definition
A modified guanine nucleotide added to the 5' end of pre-mRNAs during transcription. This cap protects mRNA from degradation and assists in ribosome binding during translation.
Analogy
The GTP cap is like a helmet for a bike rider. It protects the mRNA (the rider) from damage and helps it to perform its function effectively, just as a helmet protects the head and allows cyclists to ride safely.
