A basic solution is one that contains more hydroxide ions (OH-) than hydrogen ions (H+), resulting in a pH greater than 7.
Consider a basic solution like baking soda. Baking soda can neutralize the sourness or acidity in food, just as a basic solution neutralizes excess H+ ions with its OH- ions.
Hydroxide Ion (OH-): The negative ion formed by one oxygen bonded to one hydrogen when water dissociates.
Alkali: Another term for base, these substances dissolve in water releasing hydroxide ions into the water making the water 'basic'.
Base: A substance capable of reacting with an acid to form salt and water, or accepting protons or donating pairs of electrons.
