Vertebral arteries

Definition

Vertebral arteries are a pair of major arteries that originate from the subclavian arteries and ascend through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae to supply blood to the upper spinal cord, brainstem, cerebellum, and posterior part of the brain. They join to form the basilar artery at the base of the skull.

A major artery formed by the fusion of both vertebral arteries at the base of the skull, supplying blood to much of the brainstem, cerebellum, and posterior cerebral hemispheres.

Subclavian Arteries: The paired major arteries that pass below the clavicle, giving rise to several branches including the vertebral arteries, which supply blood to parts of the upper body including shoulders, neck, and head.

The posterior part of the brain adjoining and structurally continuous with the spinal cord, providing main motor and sensory innervation to the face and neck via cranial nerves
