Definition

The spinal accessory nerve, also known as cranial nerve XI, is a motor nerve that supplies the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles, enabling movements of the head, neck, and shoulders. It originates from neurons in the spinal cord and brainstem and exits the skull through the jugular foramen.
