Pleura

Definition

The pleura is a double-layered membrane surrounding each lung, consisting of an outer parietal layer that attaches to the chest wall and an inner visceral layer that covers the lungs themselves. Between these layers is a small space filled with pleural fluid, which reduces friction during breathing.
