AP Psychology
Unit 8 – Clinical Psychology
Topic 8.1
Why might mental health self-reports not provide accurate diagnoses according to critics?
Self-reports cannot be used in diagnosing serious mental health conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
Respondents may misremember, misunderstand questions or intentionally misrepresent symptoms.
Mental health professionals do not trust self-reported data due its lack of reliability compared to clinical diagnosis tools like brain scans or blood tests.
Respondents often don't know their own symptoms accurately enough for self-reporting.
