AP European History
Unit 9 – Cold War and Contemporary Europe
Topic 9.3
How might history change if Gorbachev didn't introduce glasnost and perestroika policies during his leadership?
The Cold War would have ended sooner without these policies.
Russia would immediately transition into a fully democratic society with free market economy principles even before Gorbachev’s resignation in December ‘91 .
There wouldn’t be any impact on the international relations involving USSR particularly with USA.
A slower dissolution, or possible continuation, of the USSR might occur without these reform movements pushing for transparency and restructuring respectively.
