Definition

An α anomer is one of two stereoisomers of a cyclic saccharide (sugar) where the -OH (hydroxyl) group attached to the anomeric carbon is positioned on the opposite side (trans) to the CH2OH group of the sugar ring. This specific orientation determines its physical and chemical properties.
