  2. Attentive stage: attention binds those separate features together into coherent objects. This happens serially, one object at a time, and takes more time.

This two-stage process solves the binding problem: how does the brain know which color goes with which shape? Attention acts as the "glue" that combines separate feature maps into unified perceptual objects.

Illusory conjunctions are the key evidence. When attention is overloaded, features from different objects get incorrectly combined. You might report seeing a red X when you were actually shown a red O and a blue X. The features were detected correctly, but attention failed to bind them to the right objects.
