Why This Matters

The kernel is the core software layer that sits between your applications and the bare metal hardware. When you're tested on kernel functions, you're really being tested on your understanding of abstraction, resource management, and protection mechanisms. How does the OS prevent one buggy program from crashing everything else? How does a single CPU appear to run dozens of programs simultaneously? How do applications access hardware without needing to know the specific details of every device?

Don't just memorize a list of kernel responsibilities. Understand what problem each function solves and how these functions interact. The kernel provides isolation between processes, efficient resource sharing, and a clean interface for applications. When an exam question asks about system calls or context switching, you need to demonstrate that you understand the fundamental contract between user programs and the operating system. Master the "why" behind each function, and the details will click into place.


Resource Allocation and Scheduling

The kernel must decide who gets what and when. These functions handle the fundamental challenge of sharing limited hardware resources among competing processes while maintaining fairness and efficiency.

Process Management

  • Process lifecycle control: the kernel creates, schedules, and terminates processes, maintaining a Process Control Block (PCB) for each one. The PCB stores everything the kernel needs to manage that process: its PID, register values, memory mappings, open file descriptors, and scheduling priority.
  • State transitions track whether a process is running, ready, or waiting (also called blocked). A process moves from ready to running when the scheduler picks it, from running to waiting when it needs I/O, and from waiting back to ready when that I/O completes.
  • Context switching saves the current process's CPU registers, program counter, and memory mappings into its PCB, then loads those values from the next process's PCB. This is what allows multiple processes to share a single processor transparently. Context switches have real overhead, so the kernel tries to minimize unnecessary ones.

Scheduling

  • CPU time allocation uses algorithms like round-robin, priority-based, or multilevel feedback queues to determine which process runs next. Round-robin gives each process a fixed time slice (quantum) and cycles through them. Priority-based scheduling always picks the highest-priority ready process. Multilevel feedback queues combine both approaches, adjusting priority dynamically based on a process's behavior.
  • Preemption allows the kernel to interrupt a running process when its time slice expires or a higher-priority process becomes ready. Without preemption, a CPU-bound process could starve every other process.
  • Throughput vs. responsiveness tradeoff: batch systems optimize for total work completed (favoring longer time slices and fewer context switches), while interactive systems minimize response time (favoring shorter time slices so the user doesn't notice delays).

Memory Management

  • Virtual memory creates the illusion that each process has its own private address space. The kernel maintains page tables that map virtual addresses to physical frames. The MMU (Memory Management Unit) in hardware performs this translation on every memory access.
  • Demand paging loads pages into RAM only when a process actually accesses them, rather than loading the entire program at startup. When a process touches a page that isn't in RAM, a page fault occurs, and the kernel fetches that page from disk. This extends effective memory capacity beyond physical limits.
  • Memory protection prevents processes from accessing each other's memory. Each process's page table only contains mappings for its own pages, and the MMU enforces these boundaries in hardware. If a process tries to access an address outside its valid mappings, the MMU triggers a fault and the kernel can terminate the offending process.

Compare: Process Management vs. Scheduling: both involve CPU allocation, but process management handles the lifecycle (birth to death), while scheduling handles moment-to-moment CPU decisions. If a question asks about "how the OS handles multiple programs," discuss both.


Hardware Abstraction and Control

The kernel hides hardware complexity from applications. These functions create uniform interfaces that let programs work with devices without knowing implementation details.

Device Management

  • Device drivers provide standardized interfaces for hardware, translating generic kernel requests into device-specific commands. For example, the kernel issues a generic "read block" request, and the driver translates that into the exact register writes and timing sequences that a particular SSD or HDD requires.
  • Uniform abstraction means applications use the same read() and write() calls whether accessing a disk, keyboard, or network card. This is sometimes called the "everything is a file" philosophy in Unix-like systems.
  • Plug-and-play support allows the kernel to detect hardware changes and load appropriate drivers dynamically, without requiring a reboot.

I/O Management

  • Buffering temporarily stores data in kernel memory to smooth out speed differences between fast CPUs and slow devices. Without buffering, the CPU would sit idle waiting for a slow device to accept each byte.
  • Caching keeps frequently accessed data in RAM, dramatically reducing disk I/O for repeated reads. The kernel's page cache (or buffer cache) can make a second read of the same file nearly instant compared to the first.
  • Spooling queues output (like print jobs) so applications don't block waiting for slow devices to finish. The application writes to the spool and continues running; the kernel feeds data to the device in the background.

Interrupt Handling

When a hardware event occurs, the CPU needs a way to stop what it's doing and respond. That's what interrupts provide.

  1. A device (keyboard, NIC, timer, disk controller) asserts an interrupt signal on the CPU's interrupt line.
  2. The CPU finishes its current instruction, then saves the current process's registers and program counter onto the kernel stack.
  3. The CPU looks up the appropriate Interrupt Service Routine (ISR) using the Interrupt Vector Table (IVT), which maps interrupt numbers to handler addresses.
  4. The ISR runs in kernel mode, handles the event (e.g., reads the keystroke from the keyboard buffer), and signals completion.
  5. The kernel restores the saved registers and program counter, resuming the interrupted process exactly where it left off.

Interrupt priority levels ensure critical events (like disk errors) preempt less urgent ones (like keyboard input). Higher-priority interrupts can interrupt lower-priority ISRs, but not the other way around.

Protection and Mode Transitions

The kernel enforces boundaries between user applications and privileged operations. These functions implement dual-mode operation (user mode vs. kernel mode) that keeps the system stable and secure.

System Call Handling

System calls are the only legitimate way for user programs to request kernel services. Here's what happens when a process makes a system call like open(), fork(), or write():

  1. The user program places the system call number and arguments in designated registers (or on the stack, depending on the architecture).
  2. The program executes a trap instruction (e.g., int 0x80 on x86, or syscall on x86-64), which is a software interrupt that switches the CPU from user mode to kernel mode.
  3. The kernel's trap handler looks up the system call number in the system call table and dispatches to the correct handler function.
  4. The kernel validates all parameters before acting on them. This is critical: user-supplied pointers could point to kernel memory, buffer sizes could be negative, and file descriptors could be invalid. Skipping validation would let malicious or buggy programs corrupt kernel data or access other processes' memory.
  5. The handler performs the requested operation and places the return value in a register.
  6. The kernel switches back to user mode and returns control to the calling process.

File System Management

  • Hierarchical organization structures data into directories and files, providing logical naming independent of physical disk layout. You reference /home/user/notes.txt rather than "blocks 4072-4089 on partition 2."
  • Access control enforces permissions (read, write, execute) based on user identity. In Unix, each file has owner, group, and other permission bits. The kernel checks these on every access.
  • Metadata management tracks file attributes like size, timestamps, and ownership in on-disk structures like inodes (Unix/Linux) or MFT entries (NTFS on Windows). The inode stores pointers to the actual data blocks, plus all the file's metadata except its name (the name lives in the directory entry).

Compare: System Call Handling vs. Interrupt Handling: both involve mode transitions from user to kernel space, but system calls are synchronous (requested by the running process via a trap instruction), while interrupts are asynchronous (triggered by external hardware events). Both use similar mechanisms to save state and transfer control to kernel code.


Communication and Coordination

Modern systems run many processes that need to share data and coordinate actions. These functions enable safe concurrent execution without race conditions or deadlocks.

Inter-Process Communication (IPC)

  • Pipes and message queues provide structured channels for data exchange. A pipe connects two processes in a producer-consumer relationship; one writes, the other reads, and the kernel handles buffering. Message queues are similar but allow multiple senders and receivers, with discrete messages rather than a byte stream.
  • Shared memory allows processes to map a common region of physical memory into their respective virtual address spaces. This is the fastest IPC method because data doesn't need to be copied through the kernel. The tradeoff: processes must use explicit synchronization to avoid corrupting shared data.
  • Synchronization primitives like semaphores and mutexes prevent race conditions. A mutex provides mutual exclusion (only one process can hold it at a time), while a semaphore generalizes this to allow up to NN concurrent accessors. The kernel also provides condition variables for processes that need to wait until a specific condition is true.

Network Stack Management

  • Protocol implementation handles TCP/IP, UDP, and other protocols within the kernel. For TCP, the kernel manages connection state (SYN, ESTABLISHED, FIN_WAIT, etc.), packet ordering via sequence numbers, flow control with sliding windows, and error recovery through retransmission.
  • Socket abstraction provides applications with endpoints for network communication. A process calls socket(), bind(), listen(), and accept() for a server, or socket() and connect() for a client. After setup, the familiar read()/write() (or send()/recv()) calls work just like file I/O.
  • Layered architecture separates concerns (link, network, transport, application layers), allowing independent development and optimization of each layer. Each layer only needs to understand the interface of the layers directly above and below it.

Compare: IPC vs. Network Stack Management: both enable process communication, but IPC handles local processes on the same machine, while networking handles distributed communication across machines.
