Definition

A sulfonium ion is a positively charged sulfur atom bonded to three organic groups. It's formed when a thiol (a compound containing a sulfur-hydrogen bond) reacts with an alkyl halide, resulting in the loss of a hydrogen atom and the gain of an alkyl group on sulfur.
