Definition

Dieckmann cyclization is a chemical reaction where a diester undergoes intramolecular condensation in the presence of a base, resulting in the formation of a cyclic β-keto ester. It's a specific type of intramolecular Claisen condensation that is useful for synthesizing five or six-membered rings.
