Chain reaction

from class:

Organic Chemistry

Definition

In organic chemistry, a chain reaction is a sequence of reactions where a reactive intermediate, often a free radical, initiates and propagates multiple steps that lead to the formation of products, with the process potentially continuing until terminated. This self-sustaining mechanism amplifies the effect of a single reactant through successive stages.
