Edman Degradation:A method for determining the amino acid sequence of a peptide or protein by cleaving off one amino acid at a time from the N-terminus and identifying each released amino acid.
N-terminus:The end of a protein or peptide that has a free amino group (NH2).
Phenylisothiocyanate (PITC): Another reagent used in the Edman degradation method, which reacts with the N-terminal amino acid to form a phenylthiohydantoin derivative.
