Definition

The tear sac, or lacrimal sac, is part of the tear drainage system in the eye. It collects tears from the eye and drains them into the nasal cavity.

The tear sac is located in a depression called the lacrimal fossa, situated between the eye and the nose.
It plays a crucial role in maintaining moisture on the surface of the eye by draining excess tears.
Infections of the tear sac, known as dacryocystitis, can lead to painful swelling and redness near the inner corner of the eye.
The normal microbiota of the tear sac can include bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis and Corynebacterium species.
Obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct can lead to chronic tearing and increase susceptibility to infections.

Lacrimal Gland: A gland located above each eyeball that produces tears.

Nasolacrimal Duct: The duct that carries tears from the lacrimal sac into the nasal cavity.

A thin membrane covering part of the front surface of the eye and lining inside of eyelids.
