Definition

Unilateral descent is a system of family lineage in which an individual is considered to belong to one parent's lineage exclusively, either the mother's (matrilineal) or the father's (patrilineal). It determines the group membership, inheritance rights, and social obligations based on the lineage of one side of the family.
