from class:

Intro to Astronomy

Definition

The stratosphere is the second major layer of Earth's atmosphere, located above the troposphere and below the mesosphere. It extends from about 10 to 50 kilometers (6 to 31 miles) above Earth's surface.

congrats on reading the definition of stratosphere. now let's actually learn it.

ok, let's learn stuff

5 Must Know Facts For Your Next Test

  1. The stratosphere contains the ozone layer, which absorbs and scatters ultraviolet solar radiation.
  2. Temperature in the stratosphere increases with altitude due to ozone absorption of UV radiation.
  3. Commercial jet aircraft typically cruise at altitudes within the lower stratosphere.
  4. The boundary between the troposphere and stratosphere is called the tropopause.
  5. The stratosphere is relatively stable and has very little water vapor compared to the troposphere.

Review Questions

  • What role does the ozone layer play in the stratosphere?
  • Why does temperature increase with altitude in the stratosphere?
  • At what altitudes is commercial jet flight typically conducted?
