WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service)

Definition

WAVES was established during World War II as part of the U.S Navy. It allowed women to serve in non-combat roles within the Navy.

Analogy

Imagine WAVES as an orchestra composed entirely of female musicians. Each musician plays her instrument (or performs her duty), contributing to the overall performance (or mission) without actually being on stage (in combat).
