Definition

Systemic racism refers to the systems in place that create and maintain racial inequality in nearly every facet of life for people of color.

Analogy

It's like a rigged game where the rules are subtly designed to favor one group over another. Even if individual players aren't intentionally cheating, the game itself is inherently unfair.

Related terms

Redlining: A discriminatory practice by which banks, insurance companies etc. refuse or limit loans within specific geographic areas, especially inner-city neighborhoods.

Affirmative Action: A policy in which an individual's color, race, sex, religion or national origin are taken into account to increase opportunities provided to an underrepresented part of society.

Institutional Discrimination: Discrimination that has been incorporated into the structures, processes and procedures of organizations or social institutions.
