Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th President of the United States (1877-1881). He is best known for ending Reconstruction and returning the South to home rule.
Think of Rutherford B. Hayes as a referee in a heated basketball game (the Civil War and Reconstruction period). After a long, contentious match, he blows the whistle (ends Reconstruction) and lets the teams manage themselves again (returns South to home rule).
Reconstruction: The period following the Civil War during which Southern states were reorganized and reintegrated into the Union.
Compromise of 1877: An unwritten deal that settled the intensely disputed 1876 U.S. presidential election; it resulted in federal government pulling out troops from South, effectively ending Reconstruction.
Home Rule: The ability or power of a constituent part (like a state or municipality) to exercise authority in certain areas without interference from higher levels of government.
