French Colonization

Definition

French colonization refers to the establishment of French control over territories in the Americas, Africa, and Asia from the 16th to 20th centuries. In North America, this primarily included areas in Canada and Louisiana.

Analogy

Think of French Colonization like a chef opening up new restaurants in different locations. The chef (France) wants to spread their unique cuisine (culture and influence) and also gain access to local ingredients (resources).

New France: This was the area colonized by France in North America during a period beginning with the exploration of the Saint Lawrence River by Jacques Cartier in 1534 and ending with the cession of New France to Great Britain and Spain in 1763.

Fur Trade: A significant part of colonial economy involving trade of animal fur between settlers/colonists and Native Americans. The French were heavily involved in this trade.

Louisiana Purchase: The acquisition of the Louisiana territory by the United States from France in 1803. This doubled the size of U.S., giving them control over lands west of Mississippi river.
