Black Power is a political slogan and a name for various associated ideologies aimed at achieving self-determination for people of African descent. It promotes black pride and advocates for the creation of black political and cultural institutions.
Think of Black Power as a motivational chant from a crowd to their favorite team (here, the African-American community). The chant doesn't just boost morale but also encourages the team to take control of the game (in this case, their social, political, and economic destiny).
Stokely Carmichael: A prominent organizer in the Civil Rights Movement in America and leader in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), who popularized the term "Black Power."
Black Panther Party: A revolutionary socialist organization founded by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton which advocated for armed self-defense against racial oppression.
Civil Rights Movement: A struggle by African Americans in the mid-1950s to late 1960s to achieve Civil Rights equal to those of whites, including equal opportunity in employment, housing, education etc.
