Lateen sails are triangular sails set on a long yard mounted at an angle on the mast. They were used primarily during medieval times and allowed ships to sail against wind.
Square Rigging: A type of sail arrangement where primary driving sails are carried on horizontal spars perpendicular to or square with their associated masts.
Junk Rigging: An efficient rigging design from China where panels of sail are fully battened for stability, allowing better control than other rigs especially upwind.
Fore-and-aft Rigging: A sailing vessel's rigging composed mainly of sails that are set along the line of the keel rather than perpendicular to it.
